Transcriber's Notes:

This indexes all of my transcriptions of the early church books for Calvary (Baptist) Chapel, which I photographed in Brynmawr on 21 May 2004.

A few names which were totally illegible are not indexed here, though they are included in the individual ledger transcriptions.

Since spelling of these individuals' names may vary greatly from one Calvary list to another and a variety of abbreviations are also used, I've employed the commonest and/or most logical spelling here. I have retained all the original spellings in the ledger transcriptions themselves.

Bapt = Year of adult baptism. Usually the individual was received into membership within a week or two of his/her baptism by immersion.

Ltr = Year received into membership by letter of dismission or recommendation from another church. See the transcriptions for details, which can provide important clues to family migration.

Rest = Year membership was restored.

Member = Year(s) appearing on membership rolls which are dated as follows: 3 Oct 1844; 1 Jan 1853; 1 Jan 1856; 24 May 1859; 25 May 1864; March 1870; and Jan 1878 (the first page of which is unfortunately missing).

I found no church book records for 1833 through 1837, the congregation's formative years. For 1837 through 1841, records are somewhat jumbled and it appears some are missing. There is a 6 year gap, 1842-1848, in my baptismal transcription due to a missing photo. The first surviving membership roll is not until 1844. Thereafter the ledgers are much more comprehensive.

Where it appears highly likely that references on multiple lists are to the same individual, I have combined them. When in doubt, I have left them separate. Needless to say, this involves making judgment calls which may prove to be incorrect.

There are no marriage records in the material I examined. For the most part it is impossible to tell from the church book whether, for example, the Bridget Lewis who was a member 1856-1870 is or is not the same individual as the Bridget Morgan who was a member from 1841 to 1853. It seems reasonable to assume that a number of Calvary women married fellow members (as my own great great grandmother Eliza Newman married fellow member William Powell in 1846), but without outside evidence we can't be sure who or how many.

There are 609 names on this index. Four are women for whom we know both maiden and married names, so they are listed twice, making an adjusted total of 605. Of this number, in 45 instances a forename + surname are shared by two or occasionally three individuals. Although the years recorded hint at whether the identically-named entries are or are not the same person, we can't be certain without other outside information. (There are a few instances of shared names in which other identifiers such as Sr./Jr. do make it clear the individuals are separate.) Thus duplicate names may be either pure coincidence (particularly where very popular surnames such as Jones, Davies, Edwards, etc. are concerned); names passed down to younger relatives; or simple clerical error (inadvertent repetition).

All this means that for the 41 years of church book pages I transcribed, in the neighborhood of 500 men, women and young adults of Brynmawr and vicinity were part of Calvary chapel's story. Since attendance was usually greater than membership, the real number was probably considerably higher but those names are unfortunately lost to us.
